You would think that when people are driving, they’re observant and careful to check their surroundings. At least, that’s what we hope. We’ve all heard the reminders to “watch out for pedestrians,” but the truth is, many drivers don’t. Too often, people seem more focused on getting from point A to point B as quickly as possible rather than paying attention to what’s happening around them.

As a student who walks to school every day, I see this issue constantly. Each morning, I have to cross a large intersection where drivers speed through yellow lights or roll past stop lines — even when students like me are in the middle of crossing. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve had to step back or rush across just to avoid being hit. To be honest, I’m tired of feeling like my safety is at risk simply trying to get to school.

I’ve spoken to many of my classmates, and they’ve all experienced similar situations. Some of their parents don’t even feel safe letting them walk anymore and that says a lot. Walking to school should not feel dangerous. It should be something normal, even enjoyable, not a daily test of how alert or lucky we can be.

All I want is for drivers to slow down, stay focused, and be aware of the people around them. Your attention could be the difference between someone making it to class safely or not making it there at all.

What Can You do?

Here are a few things I wish more people thought about when they are driving:

-Intersections are there to keep us all safe. They are not something to rush through.

-Limit your distractions. No text, call, or song change is worth risking someone’s safety, look out for pedestrians, especially near schools and crosswalks.

-Obey the speed limit. Slowing down gives you more time to notice and react.

-Be considerate of pedestrians. A few seconds of patience can save a life.

We’re students, friends, and members of your community just trying to get to school safely. Think what if that was your kid.

If drivers also stay informed and attentive, imagine how much safer our kids would be and how much more at ease parents would feel sending them to school. We’re students, friends, and members of your community just trying to get to school safely. Think what if that was your kid.
