There are four streams of waste in Mississauga: garbage, recycling, organics, and yard waste. Specialized pickup exists for items like batteries, or Christmas trees. Community Recycling Centres exist for all other items that can’t be picked up at the curb.

This page primarily deals with garbage, organics, and yard waste collection. For information about recycling, visit joehorneck.com/recycling.

Collection Schedule

Waste collection is scheduled by address, with all materials collected on the same weekday for your street. Organics are collected weekly, while garbage is collected every other week.

To check your schedule, visit the Circular Materials website for recycling, and the Peel Region waste calendar for garbage, organics, and yard waste. You can view upcoming dates, set reminders, or print a yearly calendar. Your schedule will look similar to the example shown, but your collection day may be different.

Bin Placement

  • Put your bins out by 7 a.m. on your collection day and remove them by 8 p.m.
  • Place bins as close to the curb as possible without blocking the road or sidewalk.
  • Leave 3 feet of space between bins so that trucks can access them.
  • Face the front of the bins toward the street with handles facing your house.
  • In winter, place bins on a cleared, flat area. Do not place them behind or on top of snowbanks.

The following video demonstrates the bin placement requirements in the Peel Region. Keep in mind that the video is outdated, so information about recycling may be inaccurate. Visit the Circular Materials page for up-to-date information.

Yard Waste

Leaves, branches, trimmings and plants are all types of yard waste. To have it collected by the city, you should set it out on your curb in a Kraft paper yard waste bag, or a clearly labeled yard waste container. Plastic bags are not accepted for this case.

Yard waste is currently collected weekly in the spring (mid-March to June) and fall (October to mid-December), and bi-weekly in the summer (July to September).

You can also bring yard waste to a Peel Region Community Recycling Centre (CRC).

Specialized Pickup

Large items that do not fit in any bin may also be disposed of on your garbage day. To determine whether an item will be picked up, visit the Peel Region waste sorter and search for that item. Follow any associated instructions on the website.

When you search for an item, your result will look something like this:

Batteries can also be picked up on your curb twice a year, on battery collection day. Place single-use batteries in a clear, resealable bag, and leave it on top of your organics bin. Check your collection calendar to know when battery collection day happens.

Christmas trees that are shorter than 3m will also be picked up, leave them on your curb on Christmas tree collection day. Check your schedule to know when that is. For Christmas trees that are larger than 3m, you should cut them in half to have them collected.

To learn about disposal for other specialized items, such as pesticide bags, poison ivy, or tires, visit the Peel Region Special Items list.
