My Expectations of a New Opportunity

Before starting my placement at the City of Mississauga, I expected a very serious setting, thinking that city councillors would be mainly focused on city planning and community involvement in a formal setting. To my surprise, when I arrived, the environment was completely different – it was lively and welcoming, hard work but in a relaxed environment. I believe this reflects the city and council’s commitment to being approachable and supportive, contrasting with the more formal and distant approach I had anticipated.

Initial Impressions

Upon entering the office, I noticed the friendly yet focused demeanour of everyone present. Councillor Horneck and his executive assistant greeted me warmly, expressing their enthusiasm to collaborate and support me in my co-op placement. During the office tour, I was impressed by the spacious council chamber where city-related discussions took place that are open to the public, showing how the city cares about being safe and open for everyone.

Surprising Discoveries

While exploring the office, I discovered things that changed my initial perceptions. For example, the well-designed council offices that ensure both comfort and safety for councillors which is highly impressive. However, the main thing I learned is how easy it is to talk to the city councillors or members of their team. They’re very welcoming and want to hear from people. If you have questions or ideas, I found it’s a great idea to talk to them. They’re here to help us and I encourage any individual to come during a council meeting and see it in person, or if they have any concerns to reach out to their city councillor’s team and discuss it.

Looking Ahead

I am eager to delve deeper into the inner workings of our city during my placement. This opportunity is allowing me to expand my knowledge and consider a similar career path in the future. This experience is changing how I see things such as how local governments can make a big difference in the city. For example, making public transport better, adding more parks, and improving community places. I can’t wait to learn more and be part of projects that help our ward grow and develop because I have a strong passion for helping people through whatever means I have. I also look forward to developing my online communication skills and acquiring new ones that will benefit me in various professional settings.

Growing And Helping

My first days at the placement were better than I expected. I thought it might be boring, but it’s been more than exciting and rewarding. Every day, as I learn and fit in more with the team, I find new things to look forward to. This co-op is not just about getting work experience for me; it’s about growing as a person and preparing for the future. More importantly, this work lets me help our community. I aim to support projects that improve life in Ward 6, aligning with my goal that I have always had for enhancing the well-being of others. I look forward to being part of the team’s efforts.
