The City of Mississauga and the Peel District School Board are collaborating to develop a $5-million sports field and track at The Woodlands Secondary School. This new facility will include a lit multipurpose artificial turf facility for soccer, field hockey, football, rugby and lacrosse, and an eight-lane running track, designed to benefit both students and other members of the community.
Community Need
This much needed upgrade began after teachers and the school principal reached out, highlighting the poor condition of the existing field. In response, the City and the school board have each agreed to fund half of the project, each contributing about $2.54 million. It is hoped that some funds will come from the Province’s Community Sport and Recreation Fund, and the New Builds fund.
Benefits to Students and Community
As your Ward 6 Councillor, I believe this project will provide significant improvements for both students and the other entire community. This partnership is a great example of how the City and school boards can work together.
Mayor Carolyn Parrish also expressed her support for the project stating “The kids get to use it during school hours and the community gets to use it after hours. It’s really doing dual purpose; it’s a fantastic use of our money.”
With similar projects already being completed at other schools in Mississauga, this new sports facility will add another valuable recreation space to our city.
