As extreme weather and flooding become more frequent, the City is preparing to support its community in tackling these challenges. The City of Mississauga is inviting residents to attend a Public Information Session on Wednesday, November 13th at the Living Arts Centre, where they’ll receive advice on minimizing flood damage to their homes, and businesses.

What to Expect

The event will begin with a presentation by Mayor Carolyn Parrish and City of Mississauga staff who will walk through the increasing challenges of flooding faced by the City. The ways in which Mississauga is addressing these challenges, including the resources being invested in flood prevention will also be communicated.

A recording of the formal presentations will also be made available through mississauga.ca following the presentation for those who were unable to attend the in-person session

After the presentation, residents will have the opportunity to ask questions and visit the interactive booths set up in the Living Arts Centre atrium. Community partners and experts will also be present to offer additional guidance what residents can do to further protect their properties.

Some of the partners planning to include: The Insurance Bureau of Canada, The Region of Peel, Conservation Authorities and many others.

Recovering From Flooding

In addition to the public information session, City Council has approved several measures to provide immediate relief and long-term solutions to help lessen the effects of climate change. Three of those solutions include tools allowing residents to apply for funds to help them recover from these highly impactful events.

The first is a Residential Compassionate Flood Relief Grant was approved which provides a one-time payment of $1000 to Mississauga residential property owners who suffered basement flooding damages during the severe weather events on July 16, 2024, or August 17 and 18, 2024. The Flood Relief Grant will be open to the public starting December 1, 2024.

The Basement Flooding Prevention Rebate Program provides homeowners the opportunity to apply for rebates of up to $6,800 for eligible measures, making it easier to protect their properties from future flooding incidents. The Basement Flooding Protection Rebate will be open to the public starting in February 2025.

The Flood Resilience Rebate Program which provides homeowners who experienced basement flood damage the opportunity to apply for rebates of 50 per cent of the invoiced cost up to a maximum of $3,000 to cover costs associated with measure undertaken to prevent or minimize flooding impact through the use of water-resistant materials and other measures to mitigate the damage and loss from potential flooding in the future. The Flood Resilience Rebate Program is expected to be open to the public starting in February 2025.
