As a co-op student in Councillor Joe Horneck’s office, I’ve had the opportunity to discover some of the lesser-known facts that truly highlight what makes Mississauga such an amazing city. From the impact of our public services to surprising city stats, these 10 facts might just change the way you see our city.

6 Million Library Loans

The Mississauga Library system is busier than ever. There were more than 6 million transactions in the library system as a whole for the year. This is equivalent to every resident in Mississauga taking out nearly eight items throughout the year.

59 Million Transit Rides

Mississauga’s public transit system, MiWay, is crucial for resides, with buses being boarded over 59 million times in a year- that’s around 161,643 rides a day! It’s clear that public transit plays a big part in keeping the city running smoothly.

500+ Parks to Explore

Mississauga is a green city, with over 500 parks and outdoor spaces. Whether you’re looking to relax, exercise, or explore, there’s no shortage of places to enjoy the outdoors.

100,000 Businesses and Counting

Mississauga is recognized as one of Canada’s best communities for business. With over 100,000 companies in the city, we are the second largest economy in Ontario. Retail and warehousing are especially well represented. The Economic Development team — Invest Mississauga actively fosters opportunities for entrepreneurs to come to Mississauga or to expand existing businesses with strong support for innovation.

500 Kilometres of Cycling Routes

Mississauga may surprise you with its 500 kilometres of bike-friendly routes, including multi-use trails and dedicated bike lanes. While we have much more to accomplish, our Active Transportation team is committed to expanding these routes, transforming cycling into a viable mode of transportation rather than just a recreational activity.

5,660 Kilometres of Road

Mississauga has over 5,660 kilometres of roads that are essential for connecting the city’s many neighborhoods and businesses. Each year, the city uses around 400,000 tonnes of asphalt to keep these roads in top condition- equivalent to the weight of eight adult whales!

500 Snow-Clearing Vehicles

Winter doesn’t slow Mississauga down. The city operates a fleet of 500 snow-clearing machines to keep streets, sidewalks, and bus stops accessible even during heavy snowfalls. Additionally, you can track the progress of every snowplow and salt truck.

2.1 Million Trees

Mississauga is home to an impressive 2.1 million City-owned and privately-property trees. The City maintains a database of every City-owned tree complete with the history of each.

Thousands of Recreation Activities

The City offers thousands of recreation opportunities to choose from. When you take in the multiple concurrent programs across Mississauga and all the booking opportunities, the City was offering 12,854 current and upcoming activities on the recreation programs and services page — a wide variety of options for all.

50,000 Roadway Lights

At night, Mississauga is lit up by more than 50,000 streetlights, making it safter and easier to navigate after dark.
