Burnhamthorpe Road Bridge Update
The Burnhamthorpe Road bridge over the Credit River is currently undergoing necessary rehabilitation work to extend its lifespan and ensure long-term safety for all road users. The bridge, which consists of two parallel spans of two lanes each, has been under construction in phases since earlier this year.
Initially, traffic was shifted onto one span while work was completed on the other. Upon completion of the first span, traffic was diverted to the newly rehabilitated section to allow work to begin on the second span. During the repairs, additional work was identified that has extended the project timeline.
Winter Opening Plan
The eastbournd and westbound lanes are now open for the winter.
Given the nature of the repairs and the onset of freezing temperatures, completing the project before the end of the Canadian construction season was not possible. To minimize disruptions for residents and commuters, a temporary solution has been identified:
- Temporary Wear Coat Installation: A temporary layer of asphalt will be applied to the eastbound (south) span of the bridge on Thursday, December 19. Line painting will follow shortly after, with a schedule to be confirmed.
- January Reopening: With these measures in place, the City expects to reopen both spans of the bridge to traffic by early January. This will restore two lanes in each direction over the winter months.
Final Repairs in May
Once suitable weather conditions return in the spring, the temporary asphalt layer will be removed, and the final waterproofing and permanent pavement will be installed. This will require the closure of the south span and a temporary reduction to one lane of traffic in each direction for approximately three weeks in May.
While this final phase may cause some inconvenience, it is necessary to ensure the quality and longevity of the rehabilitation work.
Staying Updated
The City remains committed to providing regular updates as the project progresses. All updates, including lane closures and construction schedules, will be posted on this page as they become available.
We appreciate your patience and understanding as we complete this critical infrastructure project. Ensuring the safety and durability of the Burnhamthorpe Road bridge is a priority, and we look forward to its full reopening in 2025.
